Music Bingo

Music Bingo

Calling all music lovers, this post is for you! As far as I’m concerned, music is pretty darn magical. Some of my earliest memories are tied to music. I clearly remember getting the Annie Soundtrack (on vinyl) for my second birthday. I wanted to listen to “Tomorrow” over and over again, much to my party guests’ chagrin. I wore a red checkered dress and spun around while crooning “it’s only a daaaaayyy awaaayyyyy.” I can still hear my Papa’s voice (a precious memory, since he passed away when I was 9) encouraging me to “Sing Ari, sing.”

With its profound impact on our brains (there’s science-backed research to prove it), crucial connection to our identities, and nostalgia-inducing properties, it’s no wonder I instantly feel better when I’m listening to a perfect playlist. For me, that’s a mix of Disney music, 90s pop, and Olivia Dean, but yours is probably different, and that’s the beauty of music!

In addition to bopping along to my own playlists while driving or doing the dishes, I also love the feeling of being in a room full of people who are all enjoying music together: swaying along to a familiar melody or belting out the lyrics to a classic crowd-pleaser.

If you can relate with any of the above, then do I have news for you!

Starting in June, Beebe Library will be hosting a new adult program that we hope will bring music lovers together in a fun and only mildly competitive way.

Do you like music? Do you like bingo? Then you’ll LOVE music bingo. It’s super easy to play. Basically, the traditional numbered bingo cards are replaced with song title cards. A host (that will be yours truly) plays short clips of popular songs, and if you have the song on your card, you mark it off. The first player to complete a designated pattern—like five in a row—shouts “Bingo!” to win. Each card will be themed with things like Classic Rock, 2000s Pop, Broadway Hits, One Hit Wonders .. you get the idea. There are no points deducted for singing along, dancing in your seat, or shouting out the correct answer for all to hear. And speaking of shouting out the correct answer: I’ll be doing that myself after approximately 30 seconds, so the element of competition is quite low. We want everyone to have the same chance to potentially get BINGO, even if you aren’t a music savant.

While our first official Beebe Music Bingo Night will be June 30 (click here to register), we did test it out with staff recently. Here are some fun candids from our trial run.

And if you’re looking for something to pass the time while you wait, may I recommend picking up one of these delightful music-themed reads.
