Making their debut this season
We all have our favorite authors, the ones we can depend on to release an entertaining read. Louise Penny will always thrill us with her mysteries, Brandon Sanderson will build us epic worlds, Frieda McFadden will shock and surprise, and James Patterson will reliably release a book every few months. Do not let this stop you from taking a chance on a first-time author. Breaking into the publishing world is incredibly difficult, and this year there are a number of authors releasing a debut title you won’t want to miss. Highlighted below are a list of new authors we recommend.
The Correspondent by Virginia Evans took the literary world by storm. This novel is written through letters that encapsulates the life of Sybil Van Antwerp. It follows a woman who has held many titles such as mother, wife, grandmother, and lawyer, and illustrates how her connections with others shaped and expanded her life.
Virginia Evans is from the east coast of the United States. She attended James Madison University for her Bachelor’s in English literature, as well as Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, for her Master of Philosophy in creative writing. Now she lives in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, with her husband, two children, and her red labrador, Brigid.
Treat Them as Buffalo by Blair Palmer Yoxall is an electrifying anti-Western from an exciting new Indigenous writer. As teenage boys begin to disappear from a Great Plains Métis community, a young man attempts to uncover the evil force lurking out of sight.
Blair Palmer Yoxall is an award-winning writer and poet. Blair is a citizen of the Métis Nation of Alberta, and is of Métis and settler parentage. He enjoys fly-fishing in the Alberta Rockies.

Rachel Hochhauser grew up in Santa Barbara, California. She attended New York University and earned a Master’s in professional writing from the University of Southern California.
Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke, follows a “tradwife” who finds herself thrust from her perfect influencer lifestyle into the brutal reality of 1855 living. Burke follows themes of womanhood, fame, faith and what a “traditional American family” looks like in her debut satirical novel.
Caro Claire Burke received her Master’s in Fine Arts from the Bennington Writing Seminars. She is the co-host of Diabolical Lies, a politics and culture podcast. Yesteryear is her first novel.
Under Water by Tara Menon was named the most anticipated book of the year by Time, NPR, and Oprah Daily. It is a moving story about grief and friendship.
Tara Menon was born in India, grew up in Singapore, spent a decade in New York, and now lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts where she is an assistant professor of English at Harvard University. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times Book Review, The Nation and The Paris Review.
