More than 170 countries have celebrated World Read Aloud Day since it started in 2010—proof that stories really do bring people together.
Reading aloud is pure magic. It sparks imagination, builds connections, and gives kids (and grown-ups!) a chance to slow down and enjoy a story together. It boosts brainpower but it also makes room for giggles, gasps, and cozy moments. Celebrating the read-aloud means celebrating what makes us human: stories, connection, and wonder.
Read-Alouds Don’t Have to End
We read to little kids all the time—bedtime stories, library lapsits, stacks of picture books everywhere. Then they learn to read on their own…and suddenly, story time disappears.
Older kids still benefit from being read to. They still enjoy it. And it’s one of the simplest, sweetest ways to stay connected—through toddlerhood, tweens, and teens. Read-alouds aren’t just for preschoolers—they’re for all ages. Some of the best shared moments happen when you read together, no matter the age.
Why Read Aloud to Older Kids?
Reading aloud introduces them to bigger words, richer ideas, and stories they might not pick up on their own. It sparks conversation, encourages thinking, and it’s fun (for everyone).
Tips for Making Read-Alouds Fun
Set the scene: Blankets, pillows, dim lights, cozy vibes—whatever makes story time feel special.
Take your time: Let the story breathe. Pause for questions, reactions, predictions, and laughter.
Make it interactive – spark discussion with open-ended questions:
- Why do you think…?
- What would happen if…?
- Tell me about…
- What do you think happens next?
Use fun voices and add drama! Characters come alive with silly voices, whispers, pauses, and sound effects. Reading time becomes a mini-performance everyone will remember. Don’t be afraid to make a fool of yourself!
Windows, Mirrors, and Sliding Glass Doors
Books are powerful because they can be:
- Windows—peek into someone else’s world
- Mirrors—see yourself reflected in a story
- Sliding glass doors—step right into the story and join the adventure
Mixing all three helps kids build empathy, curiosity, and a sense of connection to the wider world.
